Say Hey

Ben Altarescu

An unexpectedly moving short about a guy just looking for someone to talk to

Why we chose this film.

This short film raises thought-provoking questions about the difference between “contacts” and genuine connections. While smartphones can make communication feel immediate and limitless, the film reminds us that technology alone cannot replace the vulnerability, presence, and care that help people feel truly connected.

Inspiration

In the Spring of 2020 I wrote “Say Hey” as a way of exploring the anxiety and isolation I was feeling, and I suspected others were feeling, at the time. I didn’t know if it would be possible to shoot it given the state of the world, but luckily I called the hilarious and talented Drew Lewis who agreed to star in it and DP Greg Harriott who shot it, lit it, and recorded audio all by himself. I worked with an amazing team in post (Zak Engel, Kieran Kaye, Tam Le, Daniel Jaffe, Ed Mundy) and received constant support and guidance from my producers and frequent collaborators, Josh Chertoff and Matt Kazman. I’m so thankful for the effort of everyone involved and very excited to have the short out in the world.
