7LBS 8OZ

Yoo Lee

When a young mother moves to 8th street, Jersey City, NJ, she learns about the value of community and how her own perception determines her own experiences.

Why we chose this film.

This offbeat, entertaining film captures the loneliness of moving to a new neighborhood and the sense of community, connection, and belonging that can flourish when we let go of our fears and assumptions.

Inspiration

7lbs 8oz is a stop motion animated short which takes place on 8th St. in Jersey City, NJ.

It’s a story about community. It is my love letter to the neighborhood I had the privilege of living in. It took 10 years of living there and 5 years of having moved away for me to realize just how special of a place 8th St. was.

The polarization that is evident in our current society is heartbreaking. So I wanted to use comedy as a medium to engage the audience and to have the experience of breaking the bias one might carry while watching the short.

As a part of 2021 Film Independent, Project Involve fellowship that touts diversity and mentoring program, the whole production team consisting of the director, writer, producers, cinematographer and the editor were Project Involve fellowship recipients. To top it off, I was awarded a Laika animation grant. So we took everything we were lucky enough to receive and put toward creating 7lbs 8oz. As a grand jury prize winner of the Florida Film Festival, 7LBS 8OZ qualified for the 2023 Oscars.

I hope this stop motion animated short makes you laugh and warms your heart into a spot in the festival.
