A Graduation Story

Linh Tran

A college senior eagerly anticipates graduation, but when her best friend changes plans and her parents cancel their visit, she faces the day alone.

Why we chose this film.

This film offers a thoughtful look at the gap that can exist between the connections young adults want and the connections they actually have. We hope this story sparks authentic conversations about loneliness in young adulthood and ways to manage it.

Inspiration

“Loneliness is a theme I am deeply passionate about because it is universal, yet it manifests differently for everyone. No two people experience it the same way, and no two overcome it in the same manner. I want to tell this story because it is one that many people will recognize and connect with, each in their own way. This script reflects my own experiences with isolation during my final year of college. Despite the excitement of graduation, I felt a quiet disconnection that I couldn’t fully understand at the time. It was only years later, after moving to a new city, starting a new job, and forming new connections, that I could look back and recognize that my feelings were the cumulative result of many small, everyday moments rather than a single defining event.

Two films that inspired me in writing and directing this project are Frances Ha and Le Rayon Vert. Both feel almost documentary-like in observing characters navigating life and loneliness in their own ways. I found myself relating to them in ways I hadn’t expected, sometimes feeling as though these characters were written for me.

Visually, I imagine the film as minimalistic, letting the audience focus on every unfolding detail. Most shots will be at eye level, creating an observational, documentary-like perspective, as if the audience is quietly witnessing a brief, intimate moment in this young woman’s life.”
